What Poverty, Inc. Is About
The documentary looks at the unseen side of helping. From disaster relief to the donation of shoes, from adoption to agricultural subsidies, it follows what well intentioned efforts do to local economies and shows how a billion dollar industry built on poverty works: non-governmental organisations, international agencies and for profit aid contractors. The film’s question is this: does this arrangement speed up development, or does it keep the poor poor? Michael Matheson Miller’s ninety four minute American documentary asks the question from inside rather than outside: it talks with entrepreneurs, local producers and economists in the countries that receive the aid. It was completed in 2015.
