What Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Is About
Robert McCallum and Randall Lobb's 2017 documentary tells the history of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The story begins with a toy: Mattel had a muscular figure that would not sell and needed a world built around it. The cartoon was made for that reason, and a period began in American television in which the line between toy promotion and children's programming blurred. The documentary does not hide that commercial background; artists, writers and producers describe being caught between creativity and a sales target. The design of She-Ra for a female audience, the failure of the live action film and later attempts to revive the property are covered too. Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella speak. The presentation is aimed at fans and runs long. Who it's for: viewers who like eighties cartoons and popular culture history. Who it's not for: anyone with no interest in the property; the documentary drowns in detail.
