What Pray the Devil Back to Hell Is About
The documentary is about the women who came together to end a civil war in Liberia. They came from different faiths and different circles; what they had in common was what the war had done to them and to their children. Sitting in markets, at the roadside and in front of the building where the talks were held, they brought pressure to bear and had a part in bringing the peace negotiations to a conclusion. The film gives that process in the words of the people who took part and in footage from the period. The account uses no language of heroism; it shows how slow and how tiring organising is. The subject of the account is not the war itself but the patience it took to end it. Gini Reticker’s seventy two minute American documentary was completed in 2008.
