In Olivier Jahan’s 2000 film, Eric, a student, spends his time watching the neighbours. He compulsively records everything the binoculars reach from his bedroom window, then starts sending unsigned notes that make other people’s private business public. When they work out who he is, the punishment he expects does not arrive; instead they take him in. That is where the film’s real question starts: does the closeness pull him out of his solitude, or prove to him that he will always be the one looking in?
