What Pretending I'm a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story Is About
Ludvig Gur's 2020 documentary covers the making of a skateboarding video game released at the end of the nineties. It sold in the millions unexpectedly and introduced skating to a wide audience. What is interesting is how the game changed the sport. The skaters featured became known overnight, the sponsorship system changed, and a generation started skating because of the game; the narrative shows that indirect effect in detail. Developers and skaters speak together. The game's music selection forms a section of its own; many bands became known through it. The documentary is formally plain and rests on archive footage. Who it's for: those interested in video game history and skate culture. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical view; the documentary is largely celebratory in tone.
