What Primrose Path Is About
Gregory La Cava's 1940 RKO melodrama, adapted from the novel February Hill, looks at its subject with a frankness that was unusual under the production code. Ellie May grows up on the wrong hill in town, between a mother who keeps the family fed by selling herself, a father who is rarely sober, and a grandmother with a poisonous tongue. She falls for a hardworking man and marries him without telling him where she comes from, and the film really begins when that secret surfaces. Ginger Rogers steps well away from her dancing roles here, and Marjorie Rambeau earned an Academy Award nomination as the mother. Poverty is shown as desperation rather than as a moral lesson.
