Professor Marston and the Wonder Women

The story of the man who created Wonder Woman, though the actual subject is a family of three. William Moulton Marston is a psychology professor. His wife, Elizabeth Holloway, is also a psychologist and cleverer than he is, and as a woman in the academy she never gets the position she has earned. Together they work on a theory explaining human behaviour in four terms: dominance, inducement, submission and compliance. The basis of the lie detector comes out of the same work. Then Marston's student Olive Byrne joins them. The three begin living together, and the relationship destroys both their careers and their social standing. Wonder Woman is the joint product of these three people: the character's appearance comes from Olive, her directness from Elizabeth, and the lasso that compels the truth from the lie detector. Where the bondage and chain imagery in the comics came from is stated openly in the film. Luke Evans plays Marston, Rebecca Hall plays Elizabeth and Bella Heathcote plays Olive. Angela Robinson wrote and directed. Before you watch, know this: members of the Marston family objected to how the relationship is depicted. And this is not a superhero film but an openly erotic period drama.
