In the seventies an experiment was run: a chimpanzee was taken from his mother at two weeks old, placed with a family in New York and raised as a human child. The point was to see whether he could learn sign language, and what that would say about language being ours alone. Nim learned, signed, smoked, rode in cars. Then the experiment ended and nobody had thought about what happens to Nim. From that point the documentary turns very hard: a laboratory, a cage, being forgotten.
