What Pure Is About

Paul is ten and his mother is addicted to heroin. He looks after his little brother, keeps the house together, and works out by degrees what his mother is doing. He tries to save her, and wants the dealer who uses her out of their lives. Along the way he meets Louise, who works in a café. Louise understands what he is living with and stays beside him. But good intentions on their own are not enough. Gillies MacKinnon directs, with Molly Parker as the mother, Harry Eden as Paul and a very young Keira Knightley as Louise. It is set in east London. The film tells addiction not from the addict's side but from her child's.
