What Castles in the Sky Is About
In the middle of the thirties Britain learns that Germany is rapidly increasing its aircraft production and sees that the defence it has is not enough. Engineers and scientists are turned to for an answer. Robert Watson Watt and his team set about turning the idea of detecting aircraft in advance into a working system. There is not enough money, not enough time and not enough backing; the real struggle is with the bureaucracy and with having to convince people. The film tells the war not at the front but in a laboratory. Suzy Eddie Izzard appears in Gillies MacKinnon’s ninety minute British television film, completed in 2014.
