Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

Mansoor Khan's 1988 film is regarded as the beginning of a generational shift in Indian cinema. Dhanraj Singh and Randhir Singh head two enemy families whose feud goes back years. When their children Raj and Rashmi meet and fall in love, both families refuse to accept it and the young pair have to run. The story follows the Romeo and Juliet shape and stays faithful to it at the close. Its importance is that it set a young, plain, music-driven love story against the action and revenge cinema dominant in the late eighties, and in the years that followed Indian popular cinema moved in this direction. The careers of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla began here, and the songs outlived the film. Who it's for: viewers who like the classics of Indian popular cinema and tragic romance. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a happy ending; the film goes where its title promises.
