What Queen Marie of Romania Is About
The First World War has ended, Romania is wrecked, its politics are split, and it has no weight to bring to the table. As the peace talks open in Paris in 1919, the country's hopes rest on one person: Queen Marie. British-born, she goes to Paris and works through the leaders of the great powers one by one to get Romania's unification recognised. Alexis Cahill's 2019 film builds a piece of diplomatic history as a story with a woman at the centre: politics conducted in drawing rooms, at dinners and in private conversations. In Romania it was received as a film of national pride, and the events it describes are on the historical record. Roxana Lupu plays Marie.
