Quién te cantará

Lila, a singer who withdrew from performing years ago, is preparing to return when she nearly drowns and loses her memory. She does not know who she is and cannot remember her own songs. Violeta, who works in a bar and has always been her fan, is hired to teach her back to herself. Carlos Vermut does not build a thriller, yet a sense of threat runs throughout: both women are trapped in their own lives and swapping places is too attractive to both. Najwa Nimri and Eva Llorach lead. The visual language is extremely clean and the colour tightly controlled, which increases the discomfort. It is a rare film balanced between melodrama and horror. Who it is for: viewers who like contemporary Spanish cinema and strange drama about identity. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a clear explanation, since nothing here is resolved.
