What Racing Dreams Is About

Three young drivers race in the World Karting Association’s national pavement series: Annabeth Barnes, Josh Hobson and Brandon Warren. They are children, the speeds are not childish, they reach seventy miles an hour, and all three are thinking the same thing, that this is the first rung of the ladder to NASCAR. Marshall Curry’s documentary is less about the racing than about the life around it, the families, the money, adolescence itself. It screened at Tribeca in 2009 and was named best documentary feature there, and DreamWorks soon optioned it for a fiction remake. Curry had already been nominated for an Oscar before this, and he follows all three of them through a run at the national championship. Russ Wiles also appears in the footage.
