A big BMX race called Helltrack comes to town with a hundred thousand dollars for the winner. Cru is a high school student with a paper round who wants to enter, but the college entrance exam falls on the same day and his mother has another life planned for him. The company running the race does not want a local boy to win and writes the rules accordingly. Hal Needham, a director out of stunt work, builds the film entirely on the riding; real BMX athletes were used and the jumps were shot without cheating. Its most remembered scene is a dance performed on bicycles at the school prom. The story is simple and predictable, but the sport is real and it records eighties BMX culture directly. Who it is for: viewers who like eighties youth and sports films. Who it is not for: anyone looking for a solid screenplay.
