Janey is on holiday with her family at their beach house on the Mahurangi peninsula in New Zealand. Her parents, Ed and Kate, are close to divorce and spend their days on whisky, leaving Janey and her small brother Jim to themselves. Cady, a local boatman having an affair with Kate, catches the eye of a Janey barely into adolescence. Christine Jeffs's first film lets neglect and danger grow quietly inside a summer holiday. The sense of disaster arriving with the summer light carries the whole tension, and nothing is ever said loudly.
