What Rango Is About
Gore Verbinski’s 2011 animated western strands a pet chameleon in the desert, drops him into a town out of water, and watches him declare himself sheriff. The image is flawed on purpose: Roger Deakins consulted and had the Industrial Light and Magic crew reproduce the look of the Leone westerns and There Will Be Blood down to lens defects such as chromatic aberration and barrel distortion. Verbinski also refused stereo, saying he would not deliver half hearted 3D; the conversion was priced at twenty two million dollars and Paramount passed. This is a major 2011 animated feature built to be watched flat. Recording broke with custom too: the cast performed in costume on real sets so the animators had living reference, and Johnny Depp could only clear twenty days. Timothy Olyphant, who voices the Spirit of the West, ran a Clint Eastwood impression before every take. Good if you want the question of who controls the water inherited from Chinatown and the western grammar quoted straight. Bad if you are bringing a small child: the MPAA listed smoking among its reasons for the PG, Breathe California counted at least sixty smoking moments and called the film a public health hazard, and the Chicago Tribune critic reported preview children crying whenever Rattlesnake Jake appeared.
