What Ransom! Is About
The son of a wealthy industrialist is kidnapped and half a million dollars is demanded. The father assembles the money and then makes an entirely different decision: he goes on television to announce that he will not pay, and that the same sum is now a reward for anyone who delivers the kidnappers. His wife is destroyed by it, the town turns on him, the phone goes quiet, and the waiting begins. Alex Segal's film comes from a 1954 television play, with Glenn Ford and Donna Reed in the leads. The abduction is not the subject; the decision is. Can a father claim to be doing the right thing while putting his own child at risk? Ron Howard's 1996 Ransom with Mel Gibson descends from this one.
