What Reach the Rock Is About
John Hughes wrote this one alone, the last screenplay he would write by himself, and it sat unmade for roughly a decade before William Ryan finally filmed it. Released in 1998, it grossed under five thousand dollars and disappeared almost unseen. The whole picture takes place across a single summer night in a small town: Robin puts a brick through a shop window, gets locked in a cell, and settles in for an argument that runs until dawn with the officer holding the key. Quinn has an old reason of his own for keeping him there. Alessandro Nivola and William Sadler play it almost as a two-hander, and the result is colder and bleaker than anything in the Hughes high school pictures.
