Return of the Prodigal Son

Youssef Chahine's 1976 Egyptian film follows Ali's return to his village after years in prison as a political detainee. His family awaits a saviour; the man has come back exhausted both by prison and by the ideas he believed in, and meets nobody's expectation. Chahine builds the story at once as melodrama, musical and political allegory; the songs do not interrupt the narrative but continue the argument. Its subject is the disillusion of a generation in post-Nasser Egypt, and telling it through the hierarchy of a family sharpens it further. Majida El Roumi's songs are strong. The mixture of genres may feel scattered to some viewers. Who it's for: viewers interested in Arab cinema and political allegory. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story that stays in one genre, or avoiding scenes of violence and family conflict.
