What The Ring Seller Is About
In a quiet village the mayor notices that people are bored. So he invents a bandit. The name he gives him is Rajeh. He keeps telling stories about the man’s robberies and cruelties. One day he says Rajeh is heading for the village itself. Everyone takes fright. Two clever men work out that the mayor is lying. They use the name Rajeh in the dark and steal money. They beat the mayor as well. Then a man actually called Rajeh arrives in the village. He turns out to be an old man. He sells wedding rings for a living. He has come to marry his son to Rima, the mayor’s niece. The two clever men own up and go to jail. The Rahbani brothers wrote both the script and the music. Fairuz and Nasri Shamseddine appear in the ninety one minute film, a Lebanese production Youssef Chahine finished in 1965.
