What Reuben, Reuben Is About

A Scottish poet who has not written a line in years and drinks without pause makes his living touring American college towns, doing readings and living off the tables of his hosts. Meeting a young woman leaves him facing the wish to take his life and his work back in hand, though the film refuses to build that into a redemption story. Julius J. Epstein's screenplay came from Peter De Vries's novel by way of a stage adaptation, and the character in the source owes a great deal to Dylan Thomas. Tom Conti was nominated for the Academy Award for best actor for this, and Kelly McGillis made her first film here. The ending is left unspoiled.
