What The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter Is About
Robert Ellis Miller's 1968 film is adapted from Carson McCullers's novel and set in a small town in the American South. Singer is deaf and mute; when the friend he lived with is committed to an institution he moves to the town and lodges with a family. The people around him soon begin telling him their troubles: Mick, a girl who wants to be a pianist, an alcoholic doctor, a Black physician furious at racism. None of them asks what Singer thinks; they use him as a listener and pour their own loneliness into his silence. The film shows that one-sidedness plainly and keeps his own loss in the background. Alan Arkin's performance was nominated for an Academy Award. Who it's for: viewers who like literary adaptation and American drama of the sixties. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a hopeful ending; the film does not go there.
