In the Warsaw of the fifties Sabina has just turned thirty; she is a quiet woman, works at a publishing house and lives with her mother and grandmother. The mother does everything she can to find her daughter a husband, while the grandmother runs everything in the house with a sharp tongue. Then Bronisław turns up: handsome, courteous, attentive. It becomes clear that everything is going to work out for Sabina. Then it becomes clear who the man is. Borys Lankosz's first feature tells Poland under Stalinism as black comedy rather than horror; three women suddenly find themselves alone with a corpse and with a state. The fifties are shot in black and white, the short scenes that fall in the present in colour. Agata Buzek plays Sabina and Krystyna Janda the mother. The film took the Golden Lions at Gdynia in 2009 and became Poland's Oscar submission. The most frightening thing about the regime is the thing that looks most ordinary in the film.
