In a farmhouse outside Nagasaki, four grandchildren spend the summer with their grandmother Kane, who survived the bomb and lost her husband to it. As the children ask questions, what she has kept shut for decades opens: the melted iron climbing frame in a schoolyard, the shadows, the day the dead are remembered. Then an American relative arrives from Hawaii and the subject becomes forgiveness, or wanting to be forgiven. Late Kurosawa, criticised in the West for never mentioning Pearl Harbor. The last scene is unforgettable.
