What Ride a Crooked Trail Is About

After a bank robbery the man on the run takes on the identity of the famous marshal pursuing him. In the town he stumbles into, the local judge takes him for that man in earnest and keeps him on there as the new lawman. Then an old flame turns up and, to keep the mask from slipping, has to accept the role of his wife. Jesse Hibbs's western is about a man building a real life inside his own lie without noticing: a house, a wife, an orphaned boy under the judge's guardianship. The real tension of the telling is not in the gun but in the chance of losing that life. Audie Murphy takes the lead; an early Walter Matthau plays the judge. For a picture from 1958 its hero is unusually grey.
