What Walk the Proud Land Is About
A government agent is sent to the region to build peace with the Apache not through submission to the army but through respect for their right to govern themselves. In time he wins over the leaders on the reservation, and he earns the trust of the Apache widow assigned to him to keep house as well. Through diplomacy and shows of good faith the reservation moves towards running its own affairs. Meanwhile tension arises between the widow and his wife, who has come from the east. The film carries the outlook of American cinema in the fifties: however well meant, the story is still being told by the government agent himself. Audie Murphy and Anne Bancroft appear in Jesse Hibbs’s eighty eight minute American film, completed in 1956.
