What Riotsville, USA Is About
Sierra Pettengill's 2022 documentary is built entirely from archive footage. At the end of the sixties the American military constructed mock inner-city sets on its bases. On these sets soldiers played rioters and the suppression exercises were filmed. The documentary shows that footage as it is; the narrative uses it to locate where the militarisation of policing began. Television broadcasts and commission reports of the period are also used. The narration comments and does not keep its distance. Nothing was newly shot. Who it's for: viewers of archival documentary and American political history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting neutral reporting; the documentary argues an open thesis.
