What The Reagan Show Is About
The documentary is built entirely from archive footage: the White House’s own recordings, television news, rehearsal takes and the preparations of a president long used to cameras. The film looks at how Ronald Reagan, who came from acting, redefined what the presidency looked like and felt like, and it shows the first instances of politics turning into a performance in the years before reality television. The seventy five minute production was directed by Pacho Velez and Sierra Pettengill. The second half of the film is given over to the relationship that formed after 1985 between Reagan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Nancy Reagan, Barbara Walters, Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings and Ted Koppel appear in the footage. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017 and proceeds without a single voice of commentary.
