Fahrenheit 11/9

Michael Moore's film with the digits of his own Fahrenheit 9/11 reversed. The date is 9 November 2016: the night Trump's win was confirmed. But its strongest section is not Trump, it is Michigan. Moore goes back to Flint, where the water supply was switched to the Flint River as a state cost-saving measure, poison came through the lead pipes and children were poisoned. Here he indicts not one party but the handing of public services to private interest, and he puts Democrats on the same bill. The film's other two legs are the West Virginia teachers' strike and the students who organised after the Parkland school shooting. Moore's claim is that rescue will come from people organising rather than from the elected. It premiered in Toronto in September 2018 and fell far short of Fahrenheit 9/11 at the box office. Who it is for: viewers who know Moore's method and want accusation rather than argument from a political documentary. Who it is not for: anyone looking for balance. Moore puts himself in frame, edits for drama, and some moves, the Hitler comparison above all, are overstated enough to weaken his own case.
