Luis Curiel What Rock, Weed and Wheels Is About
José Manuel Cravioto's 2025 Mexican film recounts the event held at Avándaro in 1971 that became the largest rock festival in Mexican history. Two young entrepreneurs plan a small concert to accompany a car race; twenty-five thousand tickets are sold and more than two hundred thousand people arrive. What makes it interesting is telling the festival as a loss of control rather than a success. After Avándaro rock music was effectively banned in Mexico for years, and the film ends by showing that outcome. The period design and choice of music are careful. The story is crowded and some characters are not opened up enough. Who it's for: viewers interested in Mexican history and stories about rock music. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding drug content, or wanting a tightly built narrative.
