What Romance on the High Seas Is About
Michael Curtiz's 1948 American film follows a couple who each suspect the other of cheating and set traps for one another. She sends someone in her place on an ocean cruise; he hires a detective to watch his wife, and the detective follows the wrong woman. The film was Doris Day's first and made her career; the song she sings, It's Magic, was nominated for an Academy Award. The story follows a mistaken-identity template and its logic is thin; the real matter is the songs and the pace. Curtiz's direction is fast and colourful. The gender conventions belong to its period and have dated. Who it's for: viewers who like classic Hollywood musicals and Doris Day. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative depth, or troubled by the period's construction of marriage.
