Romulus, My Father

Australia, the end of the fifties. Romulus, an immigrant from Romania, works as a blacksmith in the country and is raising his son Raimond alone. His wife Christina is not there; she comes and goes, cannot stay, and is ill. The boy waits for his mother to come back. The father has stopped waiting and still cannot let her go. Around them are other immigrants, people holding on to each other. It ends heavily for all of them. What the film is about is a son remembering his father's moral character. Richard Roxburgh's first film as director; a hundred and four minutes, adapted from Raimond Gaita's memoir of the same name. Eric Bana plays Romulus, Franka Potente plays Christina and Kodi Smit-McPhee plays the boy. The book was widely read in Australia.
