Rookie

Ace is tall, awkward and wants to play basketball. The Catholic school she has transferred to has no girls' basketball team, only volleyball. She joins reluctantly and meets Georgina, the team's star player. What she learns on the court turns out to be more than the game. Samantha Lee builds a Filipino school romance as a queer story and does not treat that as something to be hidden. The Catholic school setting is a source of tension, but rather than turning it into a narrative of punishment and exclusion, the film gives the two of them room to move at their own pace. The volleyball scenes carry the rhythm of real training. Pat Tingjuy plays Ace and Aya Fernandez plays Georgina, with Agot Isidro among the adults. Who it's for: Viewers who like youth romance, sports-driven coming-of-age stories, and queer Filipino cinema. Who it's not for: The plot is familiar and the conflicts resolve easily. The sports material carries no dramatic weight of its own.
