What Saaransh Is About
A retired headmaster and his wife receive the news that their only son, who was studying in America, has been killed during a mugging on the streets of New York. While they wait for his ashes to arrive, the days turn into official correspondence, delays and emptiness. The old man turns his anger on the bureaucracy and on everything around him; his wife carries the loss differently, and the two of them grieve separately in the same house. A young woman who moves in as their lodger changes that balance. In Mahesh Bhatt’s hundred and thirty seven minute Indian film the old man is played by Anupam Kher, then thirty years old, in his first major part. It was completed in 1984.
