What Zakhm Is About
Ajay learns that his mother has been attacked by rioters as she left a church and is burned beyond saving. The flashbacks fill in what raising two sons had cost her: because she was Muslim, her marriage to the Hindu producer Raman Desai was never acknowledged, and she spent her life passing as a Christian, keeping the truth even from her own children. Her last wish is to be buried according to her faith, and in a city on fire that wish becomes a problem in itself. Mahesh Bhatt built the film out of the life of his own mother, Shirin Mohammad Ali, and cast his daughter Pooja Bhatt in the part. Ajay Devgn won his first National Film Award for it, and the film took the Nargis Dutt Award for best feature on national integration.
