Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam

At the end of the nineteenth century, in Bengal, the mansion of a landowning family is falling into decay. The master of the house spends his nights outside and neglects his wife entirely. The story is told through the eyes of a young man up from the country looking for work in Calcutta. He comes to admire the lonely lady of the house and enters the life inside the mansion. The means the woman turns to in order to bring her husband home lead her to her own ruin. The film does not offer this as a moral lesson; it tells of a class and a life coming apart at the same time. The distance between the size of the house and the loneliness inside it is at the centre. Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rehman appear in the hundred and fifty two minute Indian film by Abrar Alvi and Guru Dutt, completed in 1962.
