What Salam Neighbor Is About
Two American filmmakers decide to go to the Zaatari refugee camp, some seven miles from the Syrian border, and live there for a month. More than eighty thousand Syrians are sheltering in the camp, and the crew became the first film team the United Nations allowed to register and pitch a tent inside one. The documentary turns that closeness into a means of observation: neighbourliness, school, looking for work and the daily business of getting by all appear in the words of the people living there. Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple directed the seventy five minute American production together, and it screened at AFI Docs in 2015. The title carries both a greeting and the word for peace.
