What Salvador (Puig Antich) Is About
Salvador Puig Antich was a young anarchist in Barcelona who joined the armed group MIL during the last years of the Franco regime. They robbed banks and passed the money to the workers' movement. A Guardia Civil officer was killed in the shootout around his arrest in 1973; Puig Antich was tried, and on 2 March 1974 he was executed by garrotte, one of the last political prisoners the regime put to death. Manuel Huerga's film covers those final years, the trial, and the last days in the cell, with Daniel Brühl as Salvador. The score is by Lluís Llach, who had written "I si canto trist" about him. The film neither canonises nor prosecutes him; it shows a man of twenty-five.
