The Way

An eye doctor whose son died in France travels there to deal with the arrangements. He decides to walk the pilgrimage route his son left unfinished. Three more people attach themselves along the way, each claiming a different reason for walking. The film does not insist on faith; it makes the walking the subject, and the man's not knowing what to do with his grief opens only step by step. Martin Sheen leads; his son Emilio Estevez directed and plays the dead son. It was shot on the Camino de Santiago itself. Who it's for: those who like road films and restrained sentiment. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a fast narrative; the film imitates the pace of the walk.
