What Sammy and Rosie Get Laid Is About
Sammy and Rosie are an unconventional middle class London couple. They live in a part of the city that is boiling over, fill the house with intellectual street people, and sleep with everyone except each other. Things get complicated when Sammy's father Rafi arrives in London, fleeing political enemies at home and trailing serious allegations about his past. Stephen Frears made it in 1987 from a Hanif Kureishi screenplay, and it addresses Thatcher's London, the riots, class and the postcolonial reckoning head on. Shashi Kapoor plays the father. Our record calls Rafi an Indian minister; sources differ on that point.
