What Samsara Is About
Set in Ladakh, high in the Himalayas. Tashi has been raised in a monastery since childhood; coming back to the world after a three-year retreat he sees a woman and is caught between his vows and his wanting. He leaves the monastery, marries, becomes a farmer, has a child; then the life he left starts calling him back. Pan Nalin shot it in real landscapes with mostly local people. It exalts neither religion nor worldly life, and shows what being between them costs. Sexuality is shown explicitly. The question in the final scene is the whole film.
