What Sardar Udham Is About
On 13 April 1919, at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, British troops fired on a crowd gathered in an enclosed space; the death toll is still disputed, with a wide gap between the official British figure and Indian accounts. Udham Singh was there that day. Twenty-one years later, in London in 1940, he killed Michael O'Dwyer, the man in charge of the Punjab administration at the time of the massacre. Sircar's film moves back and forth across those twenty-one years and places the massacre at the end. That final sequence is long and direct.
