What Saturday Night Live: The Best of Eddie Murphy Is About
A 1998 compilation that gathers the most talked about sketches from Eddie Murphy’s years on Saturday Night Live. Murphy arrived in December 1980, in the fourth episode of the show’s sixth season, was promoted to the repertory cast two months later, and stayed until February 1984. What is collected here is the gallery of characters that came out of those four years: Gumby, Mister Robinson, Buckwheat, Velvet Jones. Because it is a compilation there is no through line, only a running order, and that has its own value, since watching the bits back to back shows how quickly a very young performer learned to hold a live camera. Billy Crystal and Robin Duke turn up in the tapes as well.
