Saturday, Sunday and Monday

A family in Naples. Rosa is a settled woman with several children who lays the Sunday table herself. She has come to think her husband has lost interest in her. She picks a simple way to fix it: make him jealous. But over the three days that run from Saturday to Monday, the plan brings out every old account in the family. Lina Wertmüller's Italian film is adapted from Eduardo De Filippo's play of the same name. Sophia Loren takes the lead, with Luca De Filippo in the cast. The telling moves in the familiar mould of the Neapolitan family comedy: shouting, food, pride and making up. The real subject is not jealousy but everything left unsaid piling up in a long marriage.
