Andaz Apna Apna

Two idle young men, Amar and Prem, are looking for a way to get rich without working. Each decides to marry the same millionaire's daughter and, unaware of the other, boards the same train. Meanwhile the father's gangster twin wants the same fortune, and the field fills with lies that double as they go. The film is not interested in plot. It is interested in the rhythm of absurdity: it looks for no logic, piles line upon line, and its comedy comes entirely from timing. Some of the most quoted lines in Indian cinema come from here. The form is nineties Indian comedy: songs, broad gesture, disguises and a crowded finale. Rajkumar Santoshi directed. The film did not work on release and was seen as a box-office disappointment; over the years, through television repeats and video, it became a cult item and is now counted among the best-loved of its kind. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan lead, in one of the few films they made together; Paresh Rawal plays both the father and his gangster brother. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian comedy and nineties cult films. Who it is not for: anyone after coherence. The plot is scattered, the running time is long and some jokes say nothing without the context.
