What Ghatak Is About
In Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1996 Hindi film, a merciless boss called Katya runs the city with an iron fist; the police, the traders and the courts all belong to him. Kashi, who has come down from the hills to get treatment for his sick father, meets this arrangement and refuses to bend to it, and pays heavily for the refusal. The film uses the one-man-justice formula common in nineties Hindi cinema but puts the father and son at the centre of it: Kashi’s rage comes not from his own dignity but from the humiliation of his father. Sunny Deol plays Kashi, Danny Denzongpa plays Katya and Amrish Puri plays the father.
