Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Prem has no job, drifts around with his friends and ruins everything he touches through sheer eagerness to help. He falls for Jenny in Goa, except her heart is elsewhere, so by classic comic logic he sets about helping his own rival win her. Rajkumar Santoshi builds the entire film on slapstick. Physics is negotiable, coincidences are outsized, and scenes proceed on cartoon logic. Ranbir Kapoor's comic timing here is among the loosest work of his career, and Katrina Kaif plays her part without a shred of solemnity, which suits the film. It opened on 6 November 2009 and was a substantial hit, grossing over a hundred and six crore worldwide against a forty four crore budget and finishing as the third highest earning Hindi film of that year. The flaw is structural. The second half repeats itself, and what the woman at the centre actually wants is barely asked. Who it is for: fans of loud, light Bollywood comedy. Who it is not for: anyone looking for realism or restraint.
