Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

Jai and Aditi are best friends at university and everyone assumes they are in love. They deny it flatly and set about finding suitable partners for each other. The outcome is predictable, but the film takes a long route to it. Abbas Tyrewala writes and directs. Imran Khan plays Jai and Genelia D'Souza plays Aditi. It was Imran Khan's first film; his uncle Aamir Khan was one of the producers. The distinctive thing is Jai himself. He is of Rajput descent and hates violence, and his mother is ashamed of it; the warrior ancestors in the family portrait watch him throughout. A Bollywood comedy built on a male lead who will not fight was not usual then. A. R. Rahman wrote the music, which became a hit independently of the film. Kabhi Kabhi Aditi and Pappu Can't Dance stayed in circulation for years. It was among the biggest releases of 2008 and made both Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza recognisable overnight. Who it is for: viewers who like light Bollywood romantic comedy and the young ensemble films of the 2000s. Who it is not for: the airport chase and the chain of forced coincidences in the last section are the weakest thing in it. Realism is not on offer.
