Savior

Joshua is an American soldier. His family is killed in a bombing in Paris and after that he gives himself to mercenary work. Through the Foreign Legion he ends up in Bosnia fighting alongside Serb forces. He kills for years and feels nothing. Then, during a prisoner exchange, he is ordered to transport a pregnant woman. She was made pregnant by the other side and her own family does not want her. The child is born on the road. Predrag Antonijević directs. Dennis Quaid plays Joshua. Oliver Stone is among the producers. The film tells the Bosnian war through a foreigner fighting on the Serb side, and that point of view was argued over on release. The subject is revenge running out. Joshua does not want to save anyone; the narrative does not build him as a hero and does not absolve what he did. The violence is direct and unadorned; war crimes are shown and the film gives nobody a blanket acquittal. It was shot largely in Montenegro and the locations are real. Its limit is structure; the second half becomes a road film and the narrative lets go of the harshness of the first. Who it is for: anyone interested in war drama and Balkan history of the nineties. Who it is not for: it is extremely violent, the subject is heavy, and some scenes are hard to endure.
